Coin collecting and numismatics, we say "and" because one is more about putting together a collection of coins and/or currency and the other is much more about the study of coins and currency. Every collector studies the subject of their fascination, so the distinction is pretty much academic for the purposes of this site.Coin collecting has long been called the hobby of kings, but it's also one of the most approachable of the collecting hobbies. It usually starts in childhood. We save an interesting looking coin from a handful of change and gradually add to it over the years with other interesting finds. Eventually we start seeking out the coins we collect and actively adding to our collections.
